50MHz Trophy Contest

This contest is always made by the conditions served up by the Es gods. This year was another good year with most stations getting good propagation within EU and further on both days. Though opinions varied, those operating on Sunday were rather happier than those on Saturday - an issue for those doing 6H. Your Adjudicator (as MW8R) found decent Es on Saturday but Sunday morning was special - I never knew there were so many 9A's. UK ODX was G8W's qso with D4Z at 4308km (D4Z was also worked by G8X and G3TXF).

Logging accuracy was poorer for some stations that for others with similar QSO numbers, and the outcome of one of the sections was changed by this. Accurate logging in the heat of a 6m opening is hard work - but it can be done. Use of a database to check whether what you think you heard makes sense and is a great aid in these circumstances - though, in case anyone thought otherwise - it's a check to prompt the operator to seek on air clarification and no more. The combination of the adjudication software and the R1 logs (which were again used) is sufficient to detect and penalise most logging errors.

Several entrants asked if the date could be changed to prevent the clash with Father's Day - the date is set by Region 1 and most countries in R1 do not have Fathers Day on the third Sunday in June. The alignment with the R1 event is important as is holding the contest when Es is most likely - so changing the date isn't really a practical proposition.

There were 157 entries (101 in 2019 and 120 in 2018).

Leading Intermediate Stations were 2E0OUT (SF) and 2E0WGD (6H)
Leading Foundation Stations were M7REV (SF) and M7PAT (6H)

G4FJK wins both the Telford Trophy and the Six Metre Cup - this most unusual but the absence of the multi-op portable stations means that the Highest Scoring Single operator station is also necessarily the highest scoring station - and those are the set criteria for the award of these Trophies. Congratulations to him and also to all the Certificate winners.
